DECORATING YOUR HOME OFFICE

LOCATION

Don’t cheat yourself out of a good location for your home office. You may feel tempted to stick yourself in a small corner of your home to save space. A spare bedroom with great lighting and more elbow room might be a better solution. After all, your office is where you will spend the majority of your day!

LIGHT

Make lighting a priority when choosing a spot for your office. If possible, stage your office around windows with lots of natural light and a good view. Position your monitor accordingly to avoid the glare from windows and overhead lighting, this will help prevent eye strain and headaches. Adding task lighting (lamps) to your desk is a great way to add a cozy feel while providing variety in your lighting options.

SUPPORTIVE FURNITURE

Do not skimp on your office chair. Invest in a chair with great support that fits you and your sitting style. Consider your needs with the other furniture in your office. For example a daybed or cozy couch would be a good option for a midday break, while a couple of captain chairs might be a good option for visiting clients.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Keeping your workspace simple will help you stay organized. Clear your work area of unnecessary clutter to prevent overstimulation. Utilize drawers, filing cabinets and file holders to store paperwork and other miscellaneous items.

HIDE YOUR CHORDS

Hiding your chords will help your office feel less cluttered. Loose wires and exposed technology can make a room feel sterile or cold. Take time to organize your wires with cord tamers and other organizer solutions. Invest in wireless mouses, keyboards etc. when they are an option.

STAGE TO YOUR LIKING

Your office’s primary objective is to provide a work space, but this doesn’t mean it can’t be cozy! Staging with plants and decor such as drapes, baskets and art will add warmth and character to your space. Home offices are also a great place to display collective items and memorabilia. Dressing your shelves with these items will help personalize the room and make it feel like you.
